On June 30, 1965, after a long campaign to bring a professional football team to Georgia, the NFL awarded it’s 15th franchise to the city of Atlanta. Although many fans suggested the nickname “Falcons”, a school teacher was credited with winning a contest to name the team. She wrote: "the Falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition." The Falcons have won six division titles and have made two Super Bowl appearances.
